About Accounting

Accounting forms an integral part of an organisation, being responsible for reporting on a business’ finances through the creation of relevant documents, financial statements and audits. Job Outlook

Accountants in New Zealand are in high demand and the growing economy is going to provide more career opportunities. An accountant’s salary is approximately $90,000 after gaining a Bachelor Degree, but the amount you can make depends on the level of education as well as the amount of practical experience you’ve.

To become an accountant in New Zealand requires an accounting degree or a Bachelor of Business Degree majoring in Accounting. Potential employers also tend to favour those who are members of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ). To classify as a registered Chartered Accountant requires experience, as well as a Graduate Diploma run by the CAANZ.

Advanced Diploma

An Advanced Diploma of Accounting can take between a year to two years to complete, but students can hone their skills in a practical way which can prove beneficial to career development.

Students with previous qualifications are perfect for this accounting course. Advanced Diplomas have a great ability to build on existing knowledge, which can be crucial in developing strategic decisions.

Bachelor’s Degree

As an Accountant requires a Degree qualification, many students choose a Bachelor of Accountancy or a Bachelor of Business/ Commerce with a major in Accounting. In New Zealand, Massey University is the only provider of a full Bachelor of Accountancy and is highly accredited. This course covers a range of topics,  including the policies of Accounting practices, through to the practical application of accounting skills in business. A Bachelor Degree comprises of three years full-time study and also has distance learning options.

Whether it’s through simple calculations or as in- depth as forecasting and budgeting, to be an Accountant requires a real love for numbers.
