With a number of students it attracts, the country is in an intermediate shortage of education workers, with many different job types on offer. The typical training required to become a teacher is between 3-4 years, with many obtaining a diploma or bachelor level qualification.
Teachers also need to be recognised by the New Zealand Teachers Council and have a certificate which must be renewed every three years. A Certificate qualification in education is an excellent way to start learning the basics of this exciting career. Most Certificates are for early childhood teaching and are essential in preparing yourself for the teaching workforce. - Bachelor Degree
To become a qualified teacher for primary and secondary aged students requires a Bachelor level degree. Secondary teaching may need additional education on top of this. Bachelor Degrees in New Zealand offer learning tailored to the country’s curriculum and taking part in an active work placement role also forms a large proportion of these types of teaching courses. If you want to take part in this course, but are struggling to find the time to do so because of your location or other commitments, then not to worry, some universities offer distance learning options for Bachelor of Education Studies.
- Graduate Diploma
A graduate level qualification is needed in New Zealand to teach secondary school level or above. This is often a year’s extra study on top of a Bachelor degree qualification. Most students currently enrolled would have chosen a specialised bachelor degree, such as mathematics or science, and then obtained a graduate teaching diploma on top of this.
