Whether you’re looking to become an office administrator, trying to get experience with data entry or just want flexible working conditions, careers in administration can get you there!

Administration Meaning

Administration jobs are becoming more and more recognised as being crucial to offices all over the world. Working in administration means being responsible for the daily data entry of information, customer service, and other day to day administrative duties.

A day in the life of someone working in business administration could involve answering phones, filing, drafting documents, preparing and maintaining records, speaking with customers face to face to problem solve and deliver customer service, and a whole host of other duties that you will develop over the course of your career.

Working in Administration

Jobs that deal with administrative work are in demand in every single business, and many can offer flexible working conditions and the opportunity to travel and work all over the world. You can find part time administration jobs Melbourne, full time administration jobs Manukua, or casual administration jobs London.

There are a number of careers in administration available all over New Zealand, including in Christchurch, Canterbury, Wellington, Waikoto, Auckland, and looking further afield in Australia, administration jobs in Melbourne and Sydney. Administrative jobs are always valued overseas, too, and work experience of a short course in administration can open up a number of international travel and working opportunities beyond New Zealand and Australia.

Due to the wide range of businesses that need administrative employees, it’s also the perfect area for people who are unable to work full time, or need full time hours but unusual times. Medical receptionists, for example, can often work nine to five monday to friday. On the other hand, offices that are open late at night so that employees can complete time sensitive projects may require administrative assistants who can work 4pm – 10pm. Regardless of who you are or what you’re looking to do with your life, working in administration can give you a huge variety of opportunities for your lifestyle, whether it’s travel or family oriented.

If the flexible working opportunities haven’t convinced you, working in business administration, health administration or general administration is a career option that doesn’t necessarily require a university degree. Entry requirements are often simply having a basic score in english or similar from high school. Study option are numerous, with online learning becoming more and more prevalent in education, and distance learning become more advanced. Possible courses include:

  • Diploma of Business
  • Certificate I – IV in Business Administration
  • Certificate III In Business Administration (Legal)

Careers in Administration

Though the study requirements aren’t extensive, the career paths are. Generally, most jobs in administration begin as secretarial or receptionist work, but if the flexible working hours suit you and you enjoy the work, you can continue your career through to administrative assistant, and then further on to becoming an office manager or office administrator. Eventually you may become a regional administrative manager, meaning that you manage multiple offices and the administrative staff working at them.

The job outlook for administration workers is strong, too, as while some data entry jobs are expected to be computerised, customer service and day to day administration work will still be necessary at businesses everywhere.

The average salary for an office administrator in Auckland is between

$46,232 - $55,000

Over time you may choose to specialise in order to move into another role. By completing a short course in another business specialty, you can use your administrative role as a jumping off point for further careers in HR, business management, or even in launching and running your own business. You may also choose to complete a short course in order to make you more attractive to other employers or to help you attain a pay rise. Take a look at some of the courses available that could help you get further in administration:
