New Zealand offers some of the most incredible photographic opportunities in the world.

NZ photographers have access to some of the most stunning natural photography backdrops available to them, as well as a range of photography classes and photography institutes to give them the formal training to back up natural talent.

Why Study Photography in New Zealand

New Zealand is famous for its incredible natural beauty, giving NZ photographers a plethora of landscapes to photograph. From snow capped mountains to the lakes of the South Island and the bustling of the metropolis of Queenstown, Auckland or Christchurch, New Zealand can offer both budding and experienced photographers the best possible photographic opportunities.
NZ photography therefore can offer some of the best options in the world. Some of the fantastic places that you could choose to photograph include:

  • Wanaka
  • Milford Sound
  • Tepaki Sand Dunes
  • The Church of the Good Shepherd in Lake Tekapo
  • Lake Wanaka
  • The Wanaka Tree, or other culturally significant and widely photographed trees
  • Moeraki Boulders
  • Dunedin Architecture
  • Mount Cook

Along with the incredible natural beauty opportunities, New Zealand is a destination for a number of portraiture and event photography. With location weddings becoming ever more popular, along with portraits of families and babies moving away from the traditional posed shots, New Zealand offers the chance for you to make a living in portraiture, using the incredible beauty of New Zealand as a stunning backdrop.

New Zealand also offers incredible opportunities to use photography as a way to draw attention to issues – for example, if you’re passionate about a clean earth and clean waterways you can use New Zealand’s crystal clear waters to draw attention to the lack of clean water in other places in the world. Lake Wakatipu and Lake Tekapo along with Lake Pukaki are always popular options, but the tranquility of lake scenes are a view abundant in New Zealand, and the choices are practically limitless. Other issues that could be focussed on include practically anything environmentally focussed, the cultural integrity and beauty of the Maori and other indigenous peoples, and photojournalism. On the other hand, if you’re looking to make a living as a professional photographer rather than coming from a message perspective, the number of beautiful places to photograph are numerous, and New Zealand photography can offer you everything you could ever want. You can travel all over the country taking pictures of everywhere from Otago to Glenorchy, selling your images or saving them to show in galleries.

The estimated average income for photographers is approximately

$41,0

Most New Zealand photographers start off working both privately and for a studio. Many experienced photographers also have it as a hobby, and choose to sell their photographs for a profit on top of a usual job.

Job Options:

  • Full time private photographer
  • Part time private photographer, part time studio based photographer
  • Full time studio photographer
  • Full or part time worker in another field, with photography as a profitable hobby

If you’re a beginner, photography courses NZ can give you the basis to have a career or a rewarding hobby. Many people think of only photography in terms of highlighting natural beauty, but a course in photography can give you more options, including options you may never have thought of, like post mortem photography. Photography courses in New Zealand can also give you lots of helpful photography tips, including information about photography camera BPI photography, Macro photography and LORS photography. Courses are available all over New Zealand, including photography courses Auckland and photography courses Christchurch. There are also speciality courses available, so that if you’re interested in a particular style of photography such as maternity photography you can gain the skills needed to make that future career a reality.

How to Study Photography in New Zealand

Studying photography in New Zealand can also be completed in a multitude of ways. Regardless of where you’re from, from Wellington to the North Island, there’s a course available. If you’re not in an area where you can get to classes regularly, there may be online or distance learning options available, and with the multitude of national parks, including the epic Fiordland National park and Tongariro National park, all over New Zealand, you’ll never be short of opportunities to craft your skill. You can also choose to study at either a dedicated photography institute or at a more general further education institution.
